Church Comments on the Feast
- 1199- the Bishop of Paris mentions bloodshed and improprieties,
and orders that bells must be rung in the normal way and there should be
no bawdy songs, no masks and no torch-lit processions.The Lord of the Feast
(Dominus Festi) must put on his cope in the Church , not in his home, and
with the Precentor's staff he shall lead the singing.
- 1245- Cardinal Odo, Papal legate in France wrote
to the Chapter in Sens Cathedral demanding that the feast be celebrated
with no unclerical dress and no wreaths of flowers.
- 1431- The Council of Basel outlaws th feast in Swiss
areas.
- 1444- An authority says that the services should be preformed
with devotion and reverence, without mockery or disonsnt singing. Also,
the Boy-Bishop is not to be drenched with more than 3 buckets of water
during Vespers.
